Plan A is an engaging, brief, entertainment-education video intervention designed to reduce unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people.
Plan A is an evidence-based intervention. It has been proven effective through a rigorous 5-year randomized controlled evaluation to reduce behavioral risk factors underlying teenage pregnancy. The study included over 1,700 young women and found that Plan A viewers had significant, sustained improvements in risk perception, contraceptive knowledge, patient-provider communication, HIV/STI testing, and safer sex practices. The intervention has been approved for implementation with young women by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Population Affairs (OPA).
Plan A was developed using an iterative process involving multiple rounds of refinements with intensive input from audience members and reproductive health clinic staff across the country. In addition, four experts in reproductive health provided regular feedback on storylines and script drafts to ensure medical accuracy and age appropriateness.
Plan A is designed to be easy to implement with fidelity and minimal staff burden. It can be delivered via an e-learning platform or used in outreach and health education settings with an accompanying discussion guide. The intervention is highly engaging, brief (23 minutes) compared to traditional sexual and reproductive health programs, and cost-effective for large-scale dissemination.
PlanA is available in English and Spanish and was designed for use in a wide range of settings, including:

“When there is something relatable to watch about sex education, it makes it easier to understand and makes you not feel alone or ashamed about any situation you’re in.”
“The video was entertaining and easy to watch. It provided useful information for teens/pre-teens as they begin to get in relationships.”
