Entertainment-Education is a unique and powerful approach to improving youth health behaviors

Party Foul and Plan A keep pro-health messages the central component without compromising entertainment value. This means youth remain engaged in the programs and adopt healthy behaviors as a result.

Alcohol harm reduction

Party Foul

24-minute video designed to prevent and reduce harms related to heavy drinking and to promote bystander behaviors among college students.

Sexual health education

Plan A

23-minute video proven to impact a wide range of sexual and reproductive health outcomes among young women, including HIV/STI testing, condom use, and patient-provider communication.

Entertainment-Education: Where Storytelling Meets Change

Entertainment-Education is a program method that shifts youth risk behavior by embedding health and social messages within relatable storytelling narratives. This approach leverages Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to present characters as role models, which significantly enhances a young person's self-efficacy to adopt healthy behaviors and resist peer pressure.

What sets entertainment-education apart?

Unlike PSAs or informational videos, entertainment-education uses a rigorous development methodology, including extensive formative research with the intended audience, and incorporates theory to change health and social behaviors.

By engaging the audience with highly entertaining content that includes relatable characters and situations—rather than just providing facts—entertainment-education reduces an inherent resistance to receiving educational content (i.e., a “don’t tell me what to do” psychological reaction), leading to improvements in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Furthermore, its mass-media format offers a cost-effective way to quickly reach a large audience to reshape social norms and promote positive changes at a population scale.

We believe meaningful behavior change begins by capturing the audience’s attention and emotions. When youth become immersed in compelling stories and identify with characters facing real-life challenges, they are more open to learning. Entertainment-education therefore goes beyond sharing information—it creates emotionally engaging stories where young people can see themselves and learn how to navigate difficult choices through modeled behaviors.
